Gates open at 11 am, time trials for Jr. Dragsters begin at 12 noon and time trials for all others at 2 pm.  Eliminations will begin at approximately 5:30 pm.  Gate admission is $12 and includes a pit pass and free parking.

In addition to the action on the track a special menu has been put together to host our guests.  Racers may purchase meal tickets in advance at the office to offer to their guests or purchase these on site the day of the race at Kimberly’s Kafé.

The ninth edition of the Northern Nitro Jam, the seventh race on the 2010 Nitro Jam schedule, will feature one of the biggest races ever held at the Michigan facility as the series brings in a brand new format, all new classes and one of the most anticipated shows ever at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Featuring nearly two dozen nitro-burning machines in three classes and a number of extras, this year’s Northern Nitro Jam promises to be one of the biggest events of the year. From 320 mile-per-hour Top Fuel dragsters, to the news stars of Nitro Jam in Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car, the new Nitro Jam is all about competitive nitro racing packaged in one of the most entertaining presentations in motorsports today.

US 131 and Classic Events reserve the right to change this tentative schedule without prior notice.

Headlining the field was the newly-formed Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association, who were competing in just their third-ever event. A nearly full field of 15 competitors saw Holdenville, Oklahoma’s Cary Goforth lead all qualifiers with a blistering 6.296 elapsed time. Cary, the MMPSA’s points leader entering the event, was driving the Pontiac GXP that his normally driven by Dean Goforth, his father. Dean, who hopes to be back behind the wheel of his car as early as later this month, is temporarily out of action due to pit injury that he suffered in early June.

First round winners included Bob Bertch, Trevor Eman, Steven Boone, Pete Berner, J.R. Carr, John Montecalvo, Larry O’Brien, and Cary Goforth. In the second round J.R. Carr was the winner over Pete Berner, John Montecalvo beat Larry O’Brien, Trevor Eman was triumphant over Steven Boone, and Cary Goforth continued his march through eliminations with a victory over Michigan’s Bob Bertch. In the semi-finals, J.R. Carr, all the way from Pasco, Washington, defeated John Montecalvo and Cary Goforth got a single when Trevor Eman was unable to answer the call due to some untimely breakage in the previous round. A thrilling final round race saw Cary extend his points lead with a close 6.322-second to 6.367-second victory over J. R. Carr as the nearly-identical Pontiac GXPs raced side-by-side all the way to the finish line.

In Alcohol Dragster action Marion, Indiana’s Robin Samsel took his second straight win at the track when he defeated second-generation racer Dave Hirata from Lowell, Indiana. It was a good night for Indiana racers as fellow Indiana drivers Jared Dreher and Dave Hill were the semi-finalists in T/AD.

Rounding out the evening’s feature vehicles were the cars and stars of the Supercharged Thunder series, Jimmy D’Angelo’s wheelstanding fire truck, and the Thriller Jet Dragster of Terry Rosberg. Terry, from Rockingham, North Carolina, is the son of long-time Michigan racer Dick Rosberg. Both of Terry’s runs were in the 5.80-second range at over 280 miles-per-hour and each brought the large crowd to its feet.

The highlight of local activity was a special NAPA race that saw the winner receive a massive NAPA tool chest along with a $1,000 gift certificate for new NAPA tools and equipment to stock the giant box. The NAPA race was run heads-up, “Pinks-style” and featured a field of 16 competitors that had been hand-selected based on the closeness of their elapsed times. In the final, Mike Bogardus from Jenison was the victor over Grand Haven’s Larry Bates. Despite losing the race Larry took home a $500 gift certificate from NAPA for his runner-up effort.

VP Racing Fuels Top ET’s Dave Lorentz, from Benton Harbor, was killer on the boards all night. In the semi-finals he defeated Brooke Nelson from Muskegon with a perfect reaction time and a nearly dead-on 9.441 on his 9.44 dial. In the finals Dave was even better as his 9.430 on a 9.430 dial was the victor over Indiana’s George Wrobleski.

Zeeland’s John Den Bleyker earned a berth in the Modified ET finals when he defeated Dave Brock while Jeff Green took the odd-lot single. In the finals it was all Green as his 1300 cc Suzuki Hayabusa pumped out a 9.50-second elapsed time on his 9.49-second dial to defeat Den Bleyker’s breaking-out 11.74-second run.

Street ET might as well have been renamed Mustang ET for the evening as all three semi-finalists were driving the popular Pony car. Randy Reed from Ionia, making his first-ever visit to the US 131 complex, defeated his brother Rich Reed in a battle of nearly identical maroon Mustangs while Ryan Hill, the son of T/AD driver Dave Hill, took the competition single. In the final it was all Michigan as Randy Reed made his first visit to the historic track pay off with a victory.

During the off-season US 131 Motorsports Park repaved their track. Their already impressive surface now features a concrete surface to the 1,000-foot mark for maximum traction. The new surface should once again prove that US 131 is indeed the “Fastest Track in Michigan.” Headlining this year’s racing card are the stars and cars of the Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association (MMPSA). In fact, the Thunder Nationals will be only the third event ever for the newly formed association and US 131’s Pro Stock records are likely to fall.

“We are pleased that the MMPSA chose US 131 Motorsports Park as one of their venues for their inaugural season,” US 131 Motorsports Park’s General Manager Jason Peterson said recently. “Pro Stocks have been a fan favorite at this track for many years and the professionalism they exhibit make them a real crowd pleaser. We are delighted to once again host racers like Pete Berner, Bob Bertsch, and John Montecalvo as well as the father and son duo of John and Vincent Nobile. Many other Pro Stock stars who previously raced in the IHRA series, like Mark Martino, Elijah Morton, and John Konigshofer are also expected to participate.”

MMPSA qualifying begins Friday at 5 pm with two more runs following at 7 and 9 pm that evening. Saturday will see one more qualifying session at 1 pm with eliminations beginning at 3:45 pm. Oklahoma’s Cary Goforth, the series’ points leader, will be looking to continue his winning ways after capturing a victory at the first event of the new series in Rockingham, North Carolina earlier this year. That might be easier said than done because every racer currently in the Top 10 in MMPSA points is pre-entered along with another half dozen contenders.

In addition to the MMPSA competitors, this year’s NAPA Thunder Nationals will also feature two big shows on Saturday night at 7 and 10 pm. Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, the Bowen Family’s Violator Trans/Am Nitro Funny Car, the legendary Chi-Town Hustler, the wild Supercharged Thunder cars, Jimmy DeAngelo’s wheel-standing fire truck, and Dick Rosberg’s Jet Dragster will all be a part of Saturday’s professional shows.

CRETE, Ill. July 6, 2010:  Good things often come in disguise. Such is the case with the rescheduled MMPSA race at US131 Motorsports Park. The original event slated for early May was postponed due to weather and the new date was set for July 9-10. Although the postponement was disappointing at the time, little did all involved realize what doors would open because of the date change. This weekend five Mountain Motor World Champions will be on hand to battle it out for the third MMPSA title in its inaugural year.

Reigning World Champion, John Montecalvo, had a previous family event planned for the May date and was going to have to miss the race entirely. But now he and his Sonny’s powered Chevy Cobalt will be on hand to defend his Championship title, looking to advance his current third place standing in points.

The second opportunity knocked when 2004 World Champion, John Nobile, turned over the reins of his 2010 Ford Mustang to son, Vincent. Vincent will be making his professional debut at US 131 Motorsports Park and proud papa Nobile couldn’t be happier.

Steve Spiess, crowned World Champ in 2005, would be the next to throw his hat in the ring with his 2009 Billet Specialties Chevy Cobalt. Steve, one of the original FBI (Fast Boys from Illinois), has been competing on the NHRA side, but is very excited to be back among his friends in the Mountain Motor ranks.

World Champion number four would be from the entry of 2002 and 2003 World Champion Brian Gahm and his Kasse powered 2008 Ford Mustang. Gahm has been turning heads in the ADRL’s Extreme Pro Stock ranks, but is looking forward to competing on the quarter-mile in Michigan.

And the fifth World Champion to compete in this weekend’s event would be the 2006 and 2008 World Champion Pete Berner and his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GXP. Berner, currently number two in points, is looking to move into the number one spot at what he considers his home track.

“This is going to be a ‘who’s who’ of Mountain Motor Racing!” said Tommy Dupree of the MMPSA. “It’s always tough to reschedule an event, but I am very excited to have all these past world champions back together again. You add them to the already stellar line up of the MMPSA regular contenders and you have a door car fan’s dream!”

This Saturday, July 3^rd local racers will return to “The Fastest Track in Michigan” with a double race day in the Lane Automotive Bracket Series.  Two races in one day!

The last scheduled bracket race was on June 5^th but was cut short unfortunately due to rain.  Those racers that entered the event on June 5^th in Top ET and Street will have a rain check for the racer entry only at the gate upon arrival.  The Modified class was able to complete one round of eliminations.  As US 131 Motorsports Park rules state, with one round completed the winners of the first round also have a rain check for the driver entry awaiting them at the gate.  There are no crew/spectator rain out tickets for the June 5^th event as one round of class competition was completed in the Modified class and the Jr. Dragster races were completed.

Only the racers that did not complete a round or the winners of the completed rounds of competition have rain checks for their tech cards at the gate upon entry.  This Saturday’s event will host two separate races in one day with a separate competitor entry fee for each race.  Top ET/Modified entry is $50, Street is $25 and Crew/Spectator tickets are just $12.  Gate open at 9 am with time trials beginning at 10 am and the first race starting at approximately 2:30 and the second race starting after the first race.

The CARSTAR Car Show is open to any make, model or year of car.  There is no additional cost to enter.  Car Show registration is from 5pm-10pm.  Trophies will be awarded at 11pm.

Drag Racing 101 will begin at 9 pm.  The class size is limited so be sure to sign up at Kimberly’s Kafé when you arrive.  You will learn the basics of drag racing, how to better your reaction time and become familiar with what’s needed at tech to run your vehicle and many other racing tips and terms.  This class is free, (gate admission only), fun and the perfect opportunity to heighten your drag racing skills.

Gate admission from 5pm-8pm is $12 and $20 to race.  The gates open Friday at 5pm, open test & tune begins at 6pm and CARSTAR Midnight Madness starts at 8pm where the gate entry is only $5 and $15 to run your vehicle until 1am.  Children 6-12 are only $5 and children under five years of age are free with a paid adult.
