Conjure up a thundering horde of Pro Modifieds, toss in a half- dozen window-rattling jet cars and add a wheelstander or two and there literally is something for everyone in the 2018 feature event schedule announced by US 131 Motorsports Park.
Beginning with the inaugural Memorial Weekend Midwest Bracket Nationals presented by SFG Promotions and concluding with the 29th annual AMSNOW Super Sled Shootout in September, the slate is loaded with high octane performance vehicles representing drag racing’s past, present and future.
500 Entries already sold out for the 2018 kickoff event, the Midwest Bracket Nationals which will pay a whopping $125,000 to the Saturday winner with $50,000 payouts to the winners on Friday and Sunday.
The June 1-2 return of the PDRA series means Pro Mods, Pro Mods and more Pro Mods with newly-minted series champions Mike Recchia of Roselle, Ill. (Pro Extreme), Tommy Franklin of Fredericksburg, Va. (Pro Nitrous) and Jose Gonzalez of Ball Ground, Ga. (Pro Boost) leading the assault on the eighth-mile course.
Although the Pro Mods will command the bulk of the attention, the event also will crown champions in Pro Extreme Motorcycle, Extreme Pro Stock, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and a pair of Jr. Dragster classes.
On June 9-10, the quickest-and-fastest American-made coupes and sedans confront their international counterparts in the fifth renewal of the Imports vs. Domestics Showdown featuring a Quick 8, a Quick 32 and a special no time, small tire shootout.
The Great Lakes region’s biggest combined show takes center stage June 23-24 when The Original Super Chevy Show returns as counterpoint to US 131’s annual Saturday Night of Thunder featuring Johnny Lawson’s nitro nostalgia Funny Cars, the Chicagoland Super Stocks, jets, a wheelstander and a round of the Lane Automotive Bracket Series. Chevy show cars will be featured on both Saturday and Sunday with Chevy-only bracket racing on Sunday.
The July schedule provides a perfect example of drag racing’s wide contrasts with a second SFG Promotions backed Inaugural Summer Shootout again paying a whopping $125,000 to the Saturday winner with $50,000 payouts to the winners on Friday and Sunday and the AMRA All-Harley drags July 21-22 featuring Pro Fuel bikes.
The track’s fifth annual Bottom Bulb Bash and Jr. Dragster Bonanza is set for Aug. 2-5 with $5,000, $10,000 and $5,000 to win in the big car competition and the availability of a new $275 pre-entry.
The will set the table for Top Fuel dragsters, the four Larsen Motorsports jet dragsters, nitro fuel altereds, the Nostalgia Funny Cars and Jerry McCart’s triple-engine “Homewrecker” jet truck, all part of the US 131 Northern Nationals on Aug. 10-11.
Drag racing’s future stars are in the spotlight Aug. 24-26 in the third annual Midwest Jr. Dragster Series before stepping aside for the 14th renewal of the Funny Car Nationals, Sept. 7-8.
Featuring nitro-burning nostalgia Funny Cars, fuel altered and the cars of the Nostalgia Drag Racing League, the event also will welcome back Bob Motz and the incomparable “Original Jet Truck.”
The finale will come in the form of a combined event featuring snowmobiles and motorcycles. The AmSnow Super Sled Shootout will be contested Sept. 22-23 in conjunction with the Dash for Cash motorcycle race.
