A CHAMPION WE WILL NEVER FORGET

Posted: Saturday, March 12, 2016 - 8:00:14 AM

Today, Saturday, March 12 a local racing legend and life-long resident of Kalamazoo, Jerry Arnold will be laid to rest. Arnold was well-known at Martin 131 Dragway and the current US 131 Motorsports Park as he started drag racing at its conception and went on to win back-to-back championships in the Modified class in 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1976.  He was not only an accomplished racer here, but went on to win many races nationally, won national championships and set numerous records in the NHRA.

Under many of Arnold's accomplishments, just to name a few, are his induction into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1998. Arnold also was a seven-time NHRA Division 3 Champion in the Competition Eliminator class. In 2000 he earned the title of NHRA's  World Champion in that same class.

Also, to certainly be noted, he served in the Marines during the Vietnam War.

It is evident to those who knew or heard of Jerry Arnold that he was gifted. If you didn't know him, you have heard of him at the track. Being a fierce competitor and well-liked by many he will be missed. Our prayers are with his wife, Cheri and their family and friends. This is one Champion we will never forget.

Jason Peterson, General Manager of US 131 Motorsports Park, hasn't exceled in racetrack management by being slow on the uptake. Well, they go racing.  What else?  While their bosses are relaxing this week in anticipation of the start of the NHRA's grueling Countdown to the Championship, Lagana and Hartman will spend Friday and Saturday racing their own cars down US 131 Motorsports Park's high-traction quarter mile during the 11th annual Funny Car Nationals presented by Discount Tire.

MotzIt may look vaguely like a 1998 Kenworth conventional with a sleeper, the kind you see for miles and miles traveling I-94, but on closer inspection the truck Bob Motz will drive this week during the 11th annual Funny Car Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park on Saturday night is much more aircraft than it is 18-wheeler.

Known simply as "The Original Jet Truck," Motz hybrid is a high performance paradox. Part truck, part aircraft and part race car, it has been amazing fans for more than 20 years with an exhibition described as equal parts showmanship, power and performance.

The Super Chevy Show & Night of Thunder event, which was to have been contested this weekend at US 131 Motorsports Park on May 30-31, has been postponed - not by rain or severe weather, but by the threat thereof.  And therein lies the source of track manager Jason Peterson's frustration.  "People are more than ever making plans based on weather forecasts.  It is unfortunate that our business is so reliant on not only the "real" weather, but also the forecasted weather.  With such a nice show planned and so many people traveling a good distance to attend this weekend, we feel that it is in the best interest for all to reschedule this event for later in the year."
