PDRA SUMMER DRAGS RETURN TO US 131 ON JUNE 1-2
Three Pro Mod Classes, Extreme Pro Stocks, Motorcycles and More on the Eighth-Mile

MARTIN, Mich. – After a one-year absence, the world’s premier Pro Mod drag racing series returns to US 131 Motorsports Park this week (June 1-2) with the fourth running of the PDRA Summer Drags featuring Pro Mods, Extreme Pro Stocks, Pro Extreme Motorcycles, Top Dragsters, Top Sportsman cars, Outlaw 10.5 and 632 cars, Junior Dragsters and more.

Although it has diversified, the series that revolutionized the sport when it debuted in 2014 remains, at its core, the benchmark of Pro Mod racing at the eighth-mile distance with competition in three distinctive categories: Pro Nitrous, Pro Boost, and Pro Extreme.

Because of a short wheelbase configuration, wide diversity of body styles (ranging from the 1941 Willys to the 1969 Camaro to the late model Corvette) and a vast selection of power-adders (from nitrous oxide injection, to turbochargers to superchargers), Pro Mods are not only among the most difficult vehicles to drive, they have earned the reputation of being among the most exciting to watch as well.

While opening events at Budds Creek, Md., and Benson, N.C., failed to identify an overwhelming favorite in either of the three Pro Mod categories, they did produce some surprises including the performance of former 10.5 racer Chuck Ulsch of Catonsville, Md., who drove his 1969 turbo Camaro to runner-up honors in Pro Boost at both venues.

In the hotly-contested Pro Nitrous class which is the essence of Pro Mod racing, Nevertheless, if there is a likely Summer Drags champion it is Jay Cox of Smithfield, N.C., who not only won the title at Benson’s East Coast Spring Nationals earlier this year but also won the last time the PDRA raced at US 131 in 2016.

If he is to repeat, however, Cox likely will have to deal with 2014 PDRA champ Jason Harris of Pittsboro, N.C. and veteran Randy Weatherford of Danville, Va., who won the season-opener in his popular ’69 Camaro.

In Pro Boost, Ulsch will try to get a breakthrough first Pro Mod win in a field that also is likely to include Canadian Ray Commisso of Toronto, Pro Mod pioneer Tommy Gray of Baltimore, Md., in his “Undertaker” 2006 Corvette, Roderjan Busato of Curitiba, Brazil in another 1968 Camaro and event winners Tommy D’Aprile of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Jeremy Ray of Lugoff, S.C., driver of the popular “Carolina Kingpin” 1963 Corvette.

In Pro Extreme, point leader Terry Leggett of Pinetown, N.C., who coaxed his 1971 Ford Mustang to a 3.552 second effort at Budds Creek, likely will be challenged by former series champ and world record-holder Jason Scruggs of Saltillo, Miss., who runner-upped in his return to the tour at Benson.

The PDRA’s streamlined format features Pro Mod qualifying at 12:15, 4:15 and 8:15 p.m. on Friday. The last qualifying round will be at 9:30 a.m. and racing starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a projected 10 p.m. finish.

Adult tickets are $10 Thursday, $20 Friday and $25 Saturday or $40 for the weekend. Children 12 and under are free with a ticketed adult. No parking fees.
