NDRL Cars from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s Featured at 12th annual Funny Car Nationals
MARTIN, Mich. – Nostalgia Funny Cars and fuel altereds aren’t the only throwbacks that will be featured Sept. 9-10 in the 12th annual Funny Car Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park.
Fans also will be treated to a full slate of “old school” racing in the Nostalgia Drag Racing League featuring vehicles from drag racing’s Golden Age including the 1932 Bantam roadster, the 1923 T-Model Ford and the 1941 Willys.
Racing in four categories also will include front-motored dragsters, 1960 and 1970 model Ford Mustangs, Chevy Novas, Chevy Camaros, Dodges and Plymouths and even the 1957 Chevy Bel Air in which Clarkston’s Sue Christophersen was the No. 1 qualifier in the 7.0 class last June at Bowling Green, Ky.
The NDRL will share the track with eight of the nation’s quickest and fastest nostalgia Funny Cars including the “Rolling Thunder” 1969 Chevy Camaro of three-time and reigning IHRA World Champion Jason Rupert of Yorba Linda, Calif., and the “Violator” 1970 Dodge Challenger of Shawn Bowen of Grand Blanc.
The 330 mile-an-hour “Nitro Ninja” Top Fuel dragster driven by Dom Lagana of Scarsdale, N.Y., will provide a contrast to the Funny Cars, “Nitro Mike” Kunz will show off his wheelstanding, nitro-burning PT Cruiser and veteran Bob Motz will close the show at the controls of “The Original Jet Truck,” the 200 mile-an-hour Kenworth that will be making its farewell appearance.
When purchased at the gate, adult tickets are $15 Friday and $25 Saturday. However, tickets purchased in advance at www.us131msp.com are $12 Friday and $19 Saturday or one can apply a discount coupon available at participating Discount Tire locations to reduce the gate price by $5 for a Saturday GA ticket.
Children 6-12 are $7 at the gate or $5 in advance. Children under six are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult and, as always, pit access is included with every ticket and parking is free.
NDRL qualifying is scheduled at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and Nitro Nostalgia Funny Cars will be making a hit at 8 p.m. on Friday. NDRL has a final qualifying attempt at 12 noon with eliminations throughout the remainder of the day. Nitro cars will make passes at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday followed by “The Original Jet Truck.”
