Michigan Native Beats Defending Outlaw Champion at US 131 Motorsports Park
MARTIN, Mich. – Todd Serra of Commerce Township twice lowered the national record for the eighth mile distance and, in the final, upended defending champion Kelly Shilts of New Richmond, Wis., to win the Pro Outlaw Eighth Mile title at the 27th annual AMSNOW Super Sled Shootout at US 131 Motorsports Park.
Serra followed a 4.661 at 155.87 miles per hour in the semifinals with a final round 4.658 at 156.63 mph for the win. Shilts trailed at 5.033 seconds and 128.21 mph.
A second generation racer whose late father, Harry, raced both snowmobiles and blown fuel drag boats, Serra is a past Pro Stock snowmobile winner at the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minn. (2012) who spends his time between races fabricating and building engines for snowmobile rivals.
Other winners included Cody Levasseur of North Bay, Ontario, who won an all-Canadian final in Pro Outlaw 1000; Louie Wirbell of Marion in Pro Stock and Keven Stevens of Saugatuck, who repeated in Super Eliminator with a virtually unbeatable .014 package in the final.
Marvin Kelly of Greensford, Ohio, Greg Chandler of Kingley and Chris Rybicki of Madison Heights claimed the bracket titles.
In the companion Dash for Cash event for motorcycles, Mark Musselman of Wawaka, Ind., was a repeat winner in the Saturday Pro ET race with the other titles going to Jim Underhill of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Hurley Davis of Greenwood, Ind., and Brian Clapper of Slida, Ohio.
The Fastest Track in Michigan will go to the bugs this Sunday when new and classic, air-cooled and water-cooled Volkswagens share center stage for the 9th annual Fall Bug Run. Adult admission is just $12 with children 6-12 $7 and those under six free with a ticketed adult. Gates open at 9 a.m. for spectators with time trials at 10:30 a.m., racing at 12 noon and car show awards no later than 3 p.m.
