Amid Restrictions, Northern Nationals, Funny Car Nationals Remain on Schedule
With no clear indication of when government prohibition of spectator attendance at Michigan sporting events might be relaxed amidst the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, US 131 Motorsports Park officials reluctantly announced the cancellation of the track’s popular “Night of Thunder” event which was to have been contested June 20.
“With Michigan’s ‘Stay at Home’ order extended once again, this time until June 12, there was no way we felt we could move forward with the ‘Night of Thunder,’ even with groups of 100 being allowed next week,” acknowledged US 131 Marketing Director Stephanie Peterson.
“We know we have a lot of folks who bought reserved seats and arranged for camping spots,” she said, “and we will be reaching out to them individually to see whether they would like to reschedule for next year’s event or use their equity to attend one of our other feature races this year.”
The options available are the Northern Nationals, scheduled Aug. 7-8, which will feature four 330 mile-an-hour Top Fuel dragsters and a qualified field of eight nostalgia front-engine Top Fuel dragsters, and the Funny Car Nationals, scheduled Sept. 11-12, which always attracts some of the nation’s most prominent nostalgia Funny Car racers.
